So, what I'm trying to say is, if tracking down aether currents doesn't offer a reward, but it's still semi mandatory to do (you can just ignore them, but who in their right mind would want to do that for a considerable amount of time?) and they haven't really been rooted in the lore for a long time, then why still have them? The only good thing about them is that I don't have to worry about them outside of expansion launches. I'm relatively certain the garleans couldn't attune to any aether currents, yet they can still fly wherever they want. There are tons of flying creatures and machines. Again, this makes no sense since you can only gain their only benefit after nearly finishing the msq in that zone.īy now I also feel like you'd be hard pressed to explain how they make sense lore-wise. Something that really makes me feel like this placement was made deliberately isleading is that in one of the zones you get the last 3 or 4 aether currents within very close proximity to each other but barely any at the start. At least from my experience they did a better job placing them in heavensward so they'd always be very close to the path you travel anyway. Then there is the fact that these seem to be deliberately placed near cliffs and other obstacles that prevent you from reaching them until you progressed further in the quests, so that you waste time thinking you could realistically get it if you just travel 500 yalms in that direction. The game also doesn't reward you for more actively pursuing them since you need all currents to gain any benefit at all, and the last one is always tied to one of the last quests in the zone progression. There already is a feature in this game for exploration and finding neat sights, and that's vistas. It's not a mechanic that encourages exploration because you're literally just following a direction. If there is just one thing I hate about this game it's aether currents.
